Visual Editor: adjust timing and split segments

Open the Visual Editor to move segments in time, change their length, split or add them and get the changes into your video with a re-render.

The Visual Editor shows your dub as a timeline instead of a list of lines. It is the only editor where you can move a segment in time, change how long it is, split it or add a new one. This article covers how to open it and what each control does.

Open the Visual Editor

  1. Open a finished dub from My Dubs.

  2. Go to the Edit Translation tab.

  3. In the Editor mode switch, choose Visual (marked NEW).

Simple takes you back to the list view and Advanced opens the Advanced Editor, so you can switch between all three at any time. The Visual Editor is not available while a lip-sync analysis is still running.

What you see

  • Video preview at the top, with play/pause and the current position.

  • Timeline below it, with two rows: Segments (one block per spoken line) and Lip sync.

  • Ruler above the rows — click it to jump, hold and drag to scrub.

  • Inspector on the right, showing everything about the selected segment. Click a block to select it; clicking the empty track clears the selection.

You can drag the left edge of the inspector to make it wider and the top edge of the timeline to make it taller.

Move a segment or change its length

This is what the Visual Editor adds over the other two editors:

  • Move a segment — drag the block sideways. It moves freely until it reaches its neighbours and the following segments stay where they are.

  • Change its length — drag the right edge of the block. Length and speech speed are the same thing here: you can make a line up to 30% faster or slower (0.7× to 1.3×). The drag stops at that limit, because beyond it the voice starts to distort.

  • A segment that is being generated right now is frozen. Every other segment stays draggable.

  • If the next segment sits directly against the selected one, there is no room to stretch it — move one of the two first.

Blocks you touched get an Edited badge, and any pace other than 1.00× is shown on the block as well.

Split, add and delete segments

  • Split — cuts the selected segment at the playhead into two. The playhead has to sit at least 0.8 s away from both edges, so a segment shorter than 1.6 s cannot be split. A segment that is currently generating cannot be split either.

  • New segment — inserts an empty segment. It needs a free gap on the timeline; if there is none, the button stays disabled.

  • Delete — removes the selected segment.

Every step can be taken back with Undo and Redo in the toolbar — including lip-sync toggles — right up until you re-render.

Edit text, speaker and pace

Select a segment, then work in the inspector on the right:

  • Source text — fix a word the AI misheard. A new translation is generated from it.

  • Translation — write the exact wording you want. The character-count badge tells you whether the text still fits the available time.

  • Pace — Slower, Faster and Reset, with the result shown as, for example, "2.4 s instead of 2.1 s".

  • Speaker — assign a different voice to this line.

  • Two play buttons let you listen to the original audio and to the current dubbed audio for this segment.

  • Regenerate segment — applies your edits to this one line and produces a new translation and voice-over for it. It becomes available as soon as you change something in the segment.

Regenerating gives you new audio for that segment, but the video still plays the old version until you re-render. Reviewers can change the translation but not the source text.

Get your changes into the video

A bar at the bottom counts what you have changed, for example "3 changes":

  • Re-render — saves everything and builds a new video. This takes a few minutes, and editing is paused until it is done. Re-rendering does not use extra credits.

  • Discard — throws the unsaved changes away.

Moved, resized and edited segments only become audible after a re-render. If you leave the Visual Editor or switch to another language while changes are unsaved, Dubly asks you to confirm — continuing discards them, so re-render first if you want to keep them.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Space — play / pause

  • S — split at playhead

  • N — new segment

  • L — toggle lip sync

  • ⌫ — delete segment

  • ⌘Z — undo

When to contact support

Get in touch if a re-render does not finish, a segment stays on "Regenerating…", or the new video does not contain the edits you made. Send us the dub name or link, the target language, and the number of the segment concerned.
